Vibration analysis, when done correctly, allows the user to evaluate the current condition of equipment in order to avoid failures. In today’s economy, plants are continually looking for ways to remain competitive in the market place. For maintenance departments, this often translates into fewer staff and smaller budgets. In this do-more-with-less environment, maintenance personnel can’t afford to continuously chase the next breakdown. They need to quickly and accurately identify developing faults to determine the root cause of the machinery problem so it can be fixed. Maintenance personnel can minimize unplanned downtime by scheduling needed repairs during normal maintenance shutdowns. Unscheduled downtime may cost tens of thousands of dollars per hour. Fortunately, modern vibration analysis equipment and software predict developing problems so that repair happens before disaster strikes. The latest generation of vibration analyzers, Emerson AMS 2140 Machinery Health Analyzer, has more capabilities and automated functions than its predecessors. Despite these capabilities, not even the most sophisticated equipment can predict developing problems. Even though these sophisticated tools offer many automated features and capabilities, you still need a basic understanding of vibration analysis to use the tools effectively. It is the up to the operator to understand the machines readings in order to give an accurate prediction. Having said this, there are four different levels of Vibration Analysts. Very rarely do you find a company with a level four analyst, at Kurz we have a very experienced level two vibration analyst.
